Tips for fishing the Beaverkill in May
- Use a nymph rig
- Use a heavy march brown nymph as the lead and a smaller yellow drake as tail
- Suspend nymphs 2/3 below the surface - dont tick bottom
- use 2-3x tippet. Dont even bother with 4x
- Find the nastiest most brutal whitewater
- Find long runs in the nastiest most brutal whitewater. Faster the water the better
- Make sure your drag is set tight - a 8 inch trout can pull out 50 feet while running downstream
- Don't set your drag too tight or the trout will pop off
- Don't horse these fish they are strong with crazy endurance
- Take your time playing the fish. When you think they're ready they're not
- Bring a buddy with a large net
- Make sure the trout doesn't see your buddy with the large net. They always have a little more energy.
- Make sure your buddy with the large net knows how to use it.
The Beaverkill is beautiful and the trout are wild and wily. Without these tips it will be very difficult to put them in the net
